Congressman Jeff Fortenberry
301 South 13th Street, Suite 100
Lincoln, NE 68508
Dear Congressman Fortenberry,
We the undersigned _______ individuals and organizations in the Lincoln area, in Nebraska and in the United States, request for you to renew your leadership role in the Congressional Caucus for Sudan and South Sudan Caucus. Both countries are at pivotal moments in their history as their governments transition toward a future which holds the possibility of genuine, comprehensive change. In Sudan, April marked one year since former President Al-Bashir was ousted. Corrupt military members still fill government leadership roles, and a peace deal remains unreached. In South Sudan, a new government has finally been formed, yet significant challenges will test its unity and efficacy, including the humanitarian crisis they are facing. We believe that the U.S. Congress can and should play a positive role in supporting efforts for peace, justice, and accountability in Sudan and South Sudan.
We deeply appreciate your past leadership in the Sudan and South Sudan Caucus. We know that the Sudan Caucus was an effective conduit for House Members to pursue common legislative objectives for the people of Sudan and South Sudan. We see this moment as a critical time for these efforts to be revived and continued, and that process has already begun. Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) has committed to being in leadership, and we ask you to assist in making this a bipartisan venture by renewing your co-leadership role. With your support, we believe a reinvigorated Sudan Caucus would:
Broaden congressional support for the Sudanese and South Sudanese people and provide a prominent supporting structure in the House for Members and Staff to connect with and learn from each other
Quickly raise critical concerns or provide essential support to the White House and/or State Department at times of emergency via letters from caucus co-chairs
Lead and focus congressional support for the Sudanese and South Sudanese people with specific U.S. policies via Dear Colleague initiatives for broad-based sign-on letters to the White House and/or State Department
We respectfully ask you to support the achievements of the Caucus by reinvigorating it at this crucial time. Your continued commitment will help demonstrate why support for the Sudanese and South Sudanese people is a bipartisan issue that Nebraskans are proud to support.
Thank you for your consideration,
