REVOLUTION FROM AFAR (2019, USA, 65 minutes) dir Bentley Brown Sudanese-American poets and musicians engage in performances and a conversation around third culture identity and the revolution in Sudan, from which they have been physically cut off.

Rising Up: Sudan will include performances, conversations and films to bring audiences together to witness, celebrate, and amplify the perspectives of communities in Sudan and its diaspora.

Bentley Brown is director of Faisal Goes West (Sudan Independent Film Festival 2014), Oustaz (Berlinale 2016), and First Feature (IFFRotterdam 2019). Brown grew up in Chad, where he began making films as a teenager, and from 2009 to 2011 he lived in Sudan, working across ten states with the Carter Center's international monitoring delegation for the 2009/2010 Elections, the Referendum on South Secession, and the Popular Consultations in Blue Nile and South Kordofan. He is currently completing a PhD in Emergent Technologies and Media Arts Practices at the University of Colorado - Boulder.

Makkawi Makkawi is the producer of Revolution from Afar. He is also a Sudanese-American biologist and wanna-be film-maker and photographer. Makkawi first became interested in film by accident in his late high school years. It started with a deep love and appreciation for movies and TV shows that molded his younger years and eventually transformed into a love of still photography that was informed by cinematic lighting theories and techniques. Everything Makkawi learned from practicing still photography and analyzing his favorite movies and TV shows which inspired him to delve deeper into the world of film-making. He hasn’t looked back since!

Moderated by Mohy Omer is a Sudanese American with more than eight years of work experience in the field of international development, policy and diplomacy. Currently, he is the Policy Analyst for East and Southern Africa at the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). Prior to USCIRF, Mohy worked at the National Democratic Institute (NDI) as a program officer for the Middle East and North Africa team as well as for the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) where he first focused on the Middle East and Africa team and then transitioned to working on the Sudan and South Sudan programming, where he coordinated the Youth Leaders Program. Before joining USIP, Mohy worked for U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp in Fargo, ND as well as in the Washington DC office. While working for the Senator he concentrated on researching and writing on foreign affairs, national security and defense issues. He is also the Board Chair of USAHello, a non-profit that uses technology to empower newcomers to build successful lives in the United States. Mr. Omer is also the founder of the Sudan Task Force in Washington DC, an initiative aimed at articulating to the U.S. government and nongovernmental actors the importance of greater U.S. involvement in Sudan. Mohy holds a B.S. in Political Science from North Dakota State University and M.A. in International Relations from Syracuse University.
