Please join us to listen, learn and ask questions on the current refugee situation around the globe. We will hear from experts, refugee advocates and Havurah Shalom members, about the global refugee crisis, the current status of the U.S. resettlement program, the ongoing situation at the U.S. southern border, and how Jewish congregations, communities and individuals can help. Senator Ron Wyden will deliver introductory remarks.

Speakers include:

  • Naomi Steinberg, Vice President for Policy and Advocacy, HIAS, on the global refugee situation and the U.S. response

  • Myra Dahgaypaw, Refugee Congress Delegate and Senior Partnership Officer for Justice and International Accountability at UUSC

  • Havurah Shalom members, speaking on our refugee resettlement and asylum support work

Naomi Steinberg, Vice President of Policy and Advocacy, HIAS As Vice President for Policy and Advocacy, Naomi promotes polices and legislation and helps to build support for HIAS’ work and advocacy priorities. This includes a strong U.S. refugee resettlement program, robust international refugee assistance, and fair and humane asylum policies. Previously, Naomi was the Director of Refugee Council USA (RCUSA), a coalition dedicated to refugee protection, welcome and excellence in the U.S. refugee resettlement program. In this position, she led the overall work of the Council, including facilitating partnerships between RCUSA and other nongovernmental organizations, as well as fostering strong communications between international, federal and state partners. Prior to her work with RCUSA, Naomi was the Deputy Director of the Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARAC). At SEARAC, she focused on building the capacity of community-based, refugee-led Organizations. Naomi has an M.A. in Southeast Asian Studies from Cornell University and a B.A. in Political Science from Macalester College.

Myra Dahgaypaw, Refugee Congress Delegate for Virginia and Senior Partnership Officer for Justice and International Accountability at UUSC. Myra is a Karen human rights activist from Karen State, eastern Burma. Myra was an internally displaced person and a refugee before she resettled in the United States. Since a young age, she has been a community organizer. In the past two decades, Myra has been engaged with various human rights and political issues in Burma while serving her community and Burmese diaspora in the United States. Previously, she worked as a human rights advocate at the United Nations with the Burma Fund United Nations Office. She later worked with the U.S. campaign for Burma for 12 years as Campaign Coordinator, Policy Advisor and Managing Director focusing on the United States’ Burma policy, promotion of human rights, and an inclusive democracy that includes all ethnic and religious minorities. Myra is also currently a board member of Communities of Rooted in Brilliance (CRB).
